To make a platelet donation, you will need an appointment at a center that does that type of blood donation. Like plasma, there is a special machine used to separate platelets from whole blood.

Unlike a plasma donation, however, the platelet donation process requires using both of your arms. The process takes whole blood from one arm to go into the machine for separation. Then, the remaining components are returned to the other arm.

Learn About Donating Platelets

Only a little bit of your blood goes through the machine at any particular time. The blood returned to you has an anticoagulant substance, but the calcium in your body alleviates any mild reaction.

The process also uses smaller needles than whole blood donations. Some donors report chills when their blood and fluids are returned. Center keeps blankets on hand for this reason.

A platelet donation provides up to five times the amount of platelets than a whole blood donation. Hospitals constantly need platelets for:

  • Cancer patients who lose platelets during treatment.
  • Patients who undergo major surgery.
  • Individuals who experience major injuries.
  • Those with blood disorders who need platelet transfusion to live healthy lives.

It can take two to three hours from start to finish, but this includes a health history questionnaire. If you return to the same center for another donation, the process typically takes less time. Many donors comment on enjoying the “me time” while helping save lives.

How often can you donate platelets? You can donate plasma every seven days, up to 24 times a year. While all blood types can donate, type O negative and B negative individuals should consider a Power Red donation instead.
